#40 Smile!

We have all heard that if you smile you will feel better. But......have you tried it?  I mean REALLY tried it, not just the odd smirk here and there?

I must admit the initial thought of this tip made me feel somewhat irritated, but I think that`s because I have some "smile" baggage.  At university I recall total strangers at times, actually approaching me out of the blue and blurting out "Smile!" I suppose a combination of my naturally turned down mouth and the preoccupied expression I wore as I bustled to my next class was mistaken for a frown.  Or as a friend pointed out, these guys (which they coincidentally were) were probably trying to get my attention - I think I'll go with that explanation!  Regardless of any smile baggage and reluctance you may also have........read on:

What does smiling do?  Research has suggested that smiling may actually reduce our levels of the stress hormone cortisone. Smiling is also contagious.  When people see you smile they can't help but to smile too.  On another smiley note, you have  heard the expression "Smile, it keeps them wondering."  - nothing wrong with a little intrigue!

Conduct your own little experiment, for a set time, perhaps the morning, make an effort to smile whenever you feel stressed, frustrated or upset. When that person in the other car cuts you off  at the four way stop, force a smile, maybe a smile of forgiveness and understanding.  After all maybe they were in a rush for some reason that if we knew, we would extend them compassion and concern.  When you are interrupted for the zillionth time as you are attempting to finalize your work project that is due in one hour, try a smile of amusement at the irony of the timing, and then carry on.  Your will notice you don't feel all fluttery and out of sorts, thus enabling you to continue your day in a positive way.

Having a difficult time in finding that smile?  Think of happy times, like cuddling your little one, summer vacations, or doing your favourite hobby.

Smile!
