#19 The Science of Flower Power

The simple sight and smell of fresh flowers on your table, desk, counter, or on your mantle, can do wonders. They emotionally lift the spirits.  Not only are they beautiful to look at, they tend to open up any space, aesthetically, even the most cluttered area.  Flowers provide a centrepiece of peace.

Flowers represent life and are a reminder that we should live each day to the fullest.  Their cheery presence will not go unnoticed.

According to a study on the Emotional Impact of Flowers (Rutgers University):

"The presence of flowers triggers happy emotions, heightens feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behavior in a positive manner far beyond what is normally believed."

"Common sense tells us that flowers make us happy," said Dr. Haviland-Jones. "Now, science shows that not only do flowers make us happier than we know, they have positive effects on our emotional well being. Flowers bring about positive emotional feelings in those who enter a room.  They make the space more welcoming and create a sharing atmosphere."

When I used drive to work during the "flower season" I would stop by a particular farm-stand practically every Monday morning and pick up the most beautiful, brilliant bunch of flowers for just a couple of loonies.  I would place these flowers nearby my most concentrated work space on my office desk.  Having these weekly flowers became somewhat of a ritual that brought a certain special something to my workspace.  It was a great way to start off my week.

Now my workspace is primarily in my home or in the Bundles Studio (www.darlingbabygiftbundles.com), my desk is often my counter, and my flowers are right there on my window sill - vibrant and welcoming, a symbol of gratitude, a symbol of life.
