While we busily go about our daily lives, significant changes take place. Changes, perhaps a move to a new home, the loss of a friend, or the acknowledgement that baby no longer (at two yrs. old) fits into his crib, and thus he really HAS transitioned out of infanthood. Whatever the change, living life paramountly in the present, is key.
A friend shared with me the following excerpt from Brazilian author Paulo Coelho's blog:
"One always has to know when a stage comes to an end. If we insist on staying longer than the necessary time, we lose the happiness and the meaning of the other stages we have to go through.
Closing cycles, shutting doors, ending chapters – whatever name we give it, what matters is to leave in the past the moments of life that have finished."
I have found this piece especially helpful when I "get stuck" s in the past. It has helped me to accept that it is OK to be in the present, and not feel the need to record every moment that life offers.
For instance, as a person with a passion for writing I envisioned myself as one of those mothers who would document daily life with children right down to the last dirty diaper (well maybe not quite!) - delving deep into pracitcally every single detail. I wanted to be one of those writers, and I admire greatly those that posess that determination and stamina required. I longed to capture life's precious momemts, all of them, I felt a duty to give this gift to my children.
I realized very soon after our son was born, that in order to realize such an endeavor i would either have to take time away from the now, or do what other writers do, carve out writing time perhaps late at night or very, very early in the morning. Both were a no go! Any sleep time I am able to get is like gold to me.
The bottom line for me is: by continually trying to capture the past, the present is robbed. What a shame, don't you think?
